World Language

Program Goal

We provide a dynamic, interactive, multi-media environment aimed at enhancing students’ understanding of and appreciation for the languages and cultures we teach.  Our language instructors remain constantly connected to their target language and culture through active contact with native speakers, conferences, membership in state and national language associations, travel, and various media such as films, newspapers and daily newscasts. We help to enrich students’ understanding of the curriculum by sharing stories about our own successes and struggles with language learning.  By the end of our program, successful students will have honed their communication skills, improved their understanding of the traditions of our global neighbors, and be more fully prepared for the challenges of the 21st century.

Alumni Reflections

  • “Studying Spanish for four years at Catholic Central provided the springboard for exciting research opportunities at Notre Dame, including funding for travel to Europe and South America.” Joe VanderZee, Class of 2008, University of Notre Dame
  •  “Because of the high level that the (Chinese) program is at and having four years of experience at CC, I tested out of the classes that my college offers and now have an independent study with a professor from China.  It also provided me the opportunity to visit China after my senior year and experience the country, its history, and culture first hand, which was awesome!” Owen Kane, Class of 2012, Creighton University
  • “Studying French at CC is the reason I have gone on to pursue a career in not only French, but Arabic as well. It provided me with a strong foundation and instilled in me a confidence in French that I have been able to use in real life situations during my most exciting summer yet studying abroad in France.” Natalie Abdou, Class of 2010 Grand Valley State University
