Position Title:   Special Education Teacher Consultant

Reports To: Director of Student Support Services

Hours and FLSA Status: Full-Time School Calendar Year

Position Overview:

In collaboration with the Student Support Services team, instructional faculty, and the guidance department, the Special Education Teacher Consultant will ensure most appropriate educational programming on behalf of students with an identified disability, accommodation plan or other educational support plan in accordance with the Catholic Central High School’s mission: “To challenge students to know and love God, seek knowledge and truth, respect the dignity of each person, and contribute to society through leadership and service.”

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Attends IEP meetings and serves as the Special Education provider for all identified students with an Individual Education Plan and highest need students with a Diocesan Accommodation Plan.
  • Provide instructional recommendations to classroom faculty that support differentiation, universal design for learning, accommodation, modified curriculum, and personalized learning.
  • Provide and coordinate multi-tiered interventions on behalf of identified students.
  • Integrate a variety of materials and assistive technology applications into the learning environment appropriate to the unique learning style and educational ability of students.
  • Co-teach or teach as invited.
  • Facilitate and/or organize interventions and study groups within the Academic Support Class in collaboration with Academic Support Class instructional teachers.
  • Facilitate and/or co-chair student accommodation plan meetings.
  • Ensure implementation of student accommodations and document accordingly.
  • Perform teacher and/or student observations, document findings, and provide constructive feedback.
  • Maintain records of student goals, interventions, objectives, and student progress data.
  • Assist with student transition and post-secondary planning as needed.
  • Provide school-wide professional development training when requested.
  • Coordinate and facilitate testing accommodations for identified students.  
  • Assist in screening, evaluating, and recommending placement of students.
  • Administer formative and summative assessments as requested.
  • Participate in various school wide and student support service department outreach events.
  • Assist in maintaining a resource library for faculty, parents, and students.
  • Coordinate and provide direct academic support for individual students weekly before/after school.
  • When requested, attend other departmental and planning meetings.
  • Plan and participate in parent meetings during scheduled school conferences and as needed throughout school year.
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Education.
  • Current Michigan Teaching certificate with Special Education endorsement(s).
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
  • Minimum of 3 years high school teaching experience.
  • Understanding of Michigan Administrative Rules of Special Education (MARSE), Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.


  • Science and math core content area endorsements preferred.
  • Special education learning disabilities endorsement preferred.
  • Personal curriculum development experience.
  • General knowledge and experience with Universal Design for Learning
  • Data collection measurement and experience graphing data with excel or other program.
  • Experience with assistive technology applications.
